Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory / immune-mediated disease affecting skin, nails, hair & mucous membranes. There are several causes. It appears as swelling & irritation on affected area.

Allium genus has species that contain compounds which may cause acantholysis ( i.e. loss of cohesion between keratinocytes in skin epidermis e.g. pemphigus vulgaris). Large amounts (> 5 cloves /day) may cause flatulence, flatus, heartburn & can potentiate the effects of many drugs including anticoagulants, hypertensive medications, NSAIDs, valium etc. Contraindicated in hyperthroidism. May cause allergies, irritate GI tract causing nausea, vomiting & diarrhea.
